John W. Gittinger Sr., 85, of Norman died Sunday, Oct. 19, at his home. Services will be private. Havenbrook Funeral Home in Norman is handling arrangements.
Mr. Gittinger was born Nov. 1, 1917, in Oklahoma City, to Dean Roy and Frankie Price Gittinger. He received a psychology degree and master’s degree from the University of Oklahoma. He was a Navy lieutenant commander during World War II. He served 28 years for the Central Intelligence Agency. He became chief psychologist and was awarded the Distinguished Intelligence Medal for his service. He developed the Personality Assessment System. He received an honorary doctorate from Hocking College in Ohio, the site of the Gittinger Assessment Center.
Mr. Gittinger was preceded in death by his wife of more than 50 years, Mary Frances nee Ryle.
Mr. Gittinger is survived by his daughter, Janie Travis and husband, Bruce, of Norman; son, John Jr. and wife, Diane, of Massachusetts; and grandchildren, Elizabeth and Anne Gittinger and James and Michael Travis.
Memorial contributions may be made to the University of Oklahoma Foundation, 100 Timberdell Road, Norman, Okla. 73019 for purchase of books for the university library.
