PAS Seminar
Session 15 - Case Studies Part 2 - Cases: Consider effect of NL. Applying to a case with biography.

Case continued
Will look at case to vary NL
lower NL can achieve: Crick (of DNA fame) had IQ of 116
  Very narrow plugged in biologist

With EFU, all three primitive are low. Some NL calculations suppress NL
for primitive low.

14(Euc Fuu Auc) M

10(Euc Fuu Auc)M
23 year old female
So let's look at difference NL makes

Primitive EFA not difficult adjustment in our culture for female
  Children are charming, affectionate, outgoing

Basic: efa - grown up where this lovely, sweet, emotional busy outgoing
little girl is fine - does not sit still. Expects people to love
   her and loves in return.

Surface - i' f u' - some intellectual discipline. Low "C"
   some social awareness of control

NL14 - more intellectually interesting.
Fuu easily bored - with NL14 can get more education

23 year old - choosing an adult role.

NL 10 - needs someone to help take care of them (Fuu low "C")
look for some kind of structured environment

NL14- Fuu could have as high as 12 on "C".
Might live in a group setting. Make some judgments about who can
     help her.
NL10 will live on charm and affection.
NL14 will be broader in social stimulus value to other people.

If NL16 could be gang-buster achiever (Euc) even with Fuu Auc
Intangibles make a difference

If down to NL8 - someone who will not make it on her own.
  e.g. take care of parents?
All of them vulnerable to sexual exploitation

Fuu tend to be laid back but Euc talk a lot.

NL not just horsepower but degree, detail

Can have a case where lower NL a task will absorb them but a higher
NL will not do well.

Even the NL14 a lot of emotional, practical dependence

Case ends 9:17

Real case
24 year old male - assessment might have been at age 21
13(Ecc Foc Uoc) M
"I don't know what I'm going to do with my life" college student
Started out younger of 2 brothers in a family - 1st generation Slavic parents
in an area of many Slavic people. Father successful small business.
Older brother husky athlete some college and in business with father.
4 of 5 years younger - in a sense this one belongs to mother like 1st
  belongs to father.

Primitive EFU - shy, affectionate
Interested in hockey - extraordinary hockey player.
Did a tryout at 14 with a NHL team - they thought he was 16
In contention for Olympic speed skating
  Didn't do well in HS
Boarding school next town - got into drugs
Got to college - grades poor - could not get into "good" college
Major: Biology major -
  EFU
  i* r* a*
  i\ r\ u°
  pre-med goal
Wanted to be doctor to be helping. Late 1970's - medical school still
hardest professional school to get into
Before lingo of patients as "clients"
Thought did not have grades for medical school
Primitive IRU modal medical student (memorize)
Did not take tests well. Rather depressed about it.
Laughed at idea of therapy (e.g physical) - thought that was for dummies
Soft-spoken - a bit weird
Left school to work for father - lasted 6-7 months. Picked fight with brother
Decided to try grad school biology/chemistry
By this time had rejected drugs as foolish
A chemistry professor liked him - recommended his persistence, research potential
Went to a good school got PhD in chemistry - works in crystals - doing well
Moved companies - each one put him in something new
Often says "same stupid boring thing".
Had applied to medical school but could not get in
Thought of own business
What kind of social life would you predict? (might say if he smiled more would
  be attractive).

Fo quite impassive - Uo not well developed roles
Social activity might get in way of intellectual discipline
EFUs used to picking up slights - assumes people don't like me
Did not pick up girls that liked him

In Phoenix a girl persisted - dragged him in (she was sales - likely ERA)
Living together 10 years

Reserved, not developed social role, won't dive in socially
"Anyone who likes me is wrong"
But funny and helpful.
Now in 30s

Main point of case is think about NL. 13 above average but don't expect
PhD from a 1st rate chemistry department.
Only high scores: Arithmetic, Info, Comprehension are only high scores.
Note: an EFU NL13 is functionally smarter than numbers allow.
EFU most vulnerable to underestimate true ability
